Last year in June I tried to ride the wild horse canyon trail. Didn't get very far, it was blocked with lots of blow down. Does anyone know if this trail is maintained, and if so, when is it usually open for business?

Couple of us did wild horse canyon last week. It was mostly clear. Some muddy parts but enjoyable.

How about the southern end?  From the southern park entrance of Chute Lk Rd to the canyon?  Anyone try the full loop recently?

The southern part was the best part!

We went from carpark to carpark with the intent to return via the Divide Lake Trail.  Unfortunately we ran out of daylight and food, but that's whole nother story that ends with a lot of laughter and a wife driving to Naramata.

If someone was keen to start early and get er done I'd be interested.

My friends and I were looking at doing the full loop this coming long weekend and was wondering about how much time we would need to complete the full loop around the park? We are experienced XC racers and enjoy challenging loops. I read on the parks website that this ride is fairly rugged which is great but I do not want to be hike-a-biking over fallen trees. We were originally planning to ride up to Little White until my email to FOSS was returned saying that trail was impassable from blowdowns.

Any information about the ride that you can provide is appreciated.

I'd be really interested in the ride but i'd have to plan in advance and book the night before off work.

I havn't been an xc racer since circa 97' but i'm always up for a challange.

On Sunday a mate and I started at the north carpark of OK Mtn Park and finished at the Crawford carpark.

We had originally planned to head thru OK Mtn via Divide Lake Trail and then Mountain Goat Trail.  Despite the big climb on morning legs, Divide Lake was the easy part.  Once we reached Mountain Goat Trail, we found alot of blowdown at the start of the trail.

Because of this we decided to try to go thru Baker Lake Trail, onto Frederick Trail – bad decision!  Both of these trails had ALOT of blowdown, plus they are hiking trails.  We spent 2 hours hike-a-biking until we got back out onto the Wild Horse.  The rest of trail to the south was pretty good.

So, should you do the loop?  If you are a singletrack fiend – no.  But if you want something different with a bit of a challenge, sure, but give yourself a good 6hrs or so.  There is some running streams thru the park to replenish water, we drank it untreated with no issues.

Although the last time I was there I told myself 'never again', I still want to finally finish the loop.  So if you are still planning on doing it I would love to tag along… 2503007525

Divide Lake is kind of a grim ride compared to the other stuff. It's not a trail, it's a road and it's pretty harsh.

The classic route is the Wildhorse Canyon.  You want to access it from the south end, so how you get to there is your own choice.

My recommendation:

Start at the Eldorado Hotel and ride up the Gillard FSR to the KVR.  Ride the KVR to the south access for the park (its past Chute Lake).  Follow the signs from there, and finish back at the Eldorado for Margaritas on the patio.  I'd leave at least 6 hours for that route, as it's at least 60km and I still haven't heard any reports on the southern section of the trail.

Don't even think about doing that route in the other direction.  It would be mostly uphill singletrack that's a bit too steep to pedal.  You'd end up walking your bike for 15km.

Was thinking that a loop from the parking lot off Chute Lake Rd., up Mt. Goat trail, over baker Lake trail, down Fredrick Creek trail and back to the parking lot on the southern portion of Wild Horse Canyon trail might be a decent loop.  Spoke with the contractor who is in charge of clearing trails in the park this past Friday and he assures me that all of those trails are clear, including Fredrick Creek trail…  I see that F.C. trail is marked as 'no-bikes allowed' (lame)… is this, do you think, due to the terrain, heavy foot traffic or ???

I would think that it'd have to be some pretty damned gnarly terrain to make it unridable.

Any thoughts?

PS: A few of us are riding SheepRock (near Apex Resort), this Sunday morning at 8am.  If anyone is interested, let me know; phone 250-486-2443

I finally spoke with the area manager of BC Parks, and if the trail is on the map, it's in good shape.

The recommended route is south to north, via the Wildhorse Trail.  If you want to do it as an epic loop, Climbing up through the Myra/Bellvue trails, along the KVR to the southern entrance, and back on the Wildhorse ought to kill just about everyone who tries it.

I have heard that there is a lot of blow down on the trails in the park.  Has anyone been riding, running, or hiking here of late?

Andrew and I just did the epic Smoke described above. We came across 300+ trees down on the Wildhorse Canyon tral between the South parking lot and Commando Bay, from there to the North parking lot there where maybe 30 down. It was a very long ride from Crawford, bring a loot of water!
