XC Biketoberfest?

Ok, so it's Biketoberfest.  Sounds good, unless you like riding up mountains as well as coming down them.  I mean shuttles and lifts are alot of fun but there is more to MTBco than just gravity right?

With this in mind I'm proposing a day of climbing up 3 of the local XC trails before we bomb back down.

So at 9:00am on the 18th of October we'll start at the Myra parking lot to tackle the first climb of the day.  We'll make our way up to the KVR, hop onto Vapour and enjoy our well earned descent back to the parking lot.  Drive to next location.

At around 12:00pm we will arrive at Smith Creek ready to ride the usual loop.  After the loop, we'll have a snack on whatever food you brought for yourself.  GU, PowerBar, real food, whatever.  Drive to next location.

At about 3:00pm we'll arrive at the final climb and it's a tough one.  McDougall Rim.  By this stage we'll ride as much as we can, push our bikes the rest of the way and finally, enjoy the downhill back to the parking lot.

If anyone isn't keen on that much climbing, in all honesty I don't know how I'm going to go,  you could choose to only do part of the scheduled rides.

Except for the 9:00am start, all times are approximates.  All (if any) riders are responsible for their own well being.  I accept no responsibility for anything.

Hey Lars, good idea.  I've been to a couple of the dh events, and was just thinking the same thing – need to get more xc types involved, although your big day is a little more than I had in mind!  Not sure that I am up for all three, but maybe the first two.  You might run into darkness problems starting McDougall at 3:00 pm, depending on how tired anyone remaining is by then.

When you say the Myra parking lot – do you mean the main parking lot by the power substation – at the end of Stewart Rd East?  What route are you thinking for the climb?

I've been kinda thinking that we need a bit more xc influence in the club….I know you guys are out there.

If you want to get the word out for this, send rich or smoke a quick message and see if they can get it thrown up on the main page.

I guess since 90% or more of the exec is freeride, and most of the xc trails in town are already protected, it's not our #1 priority, but thats no excuse…if I had the lungs and or the bike, i'd join you…

To get to the Myra parking lot I was refering to, continue about 200m up the gravel road past the substation.  There is a large parking area with pit toilets and information board.  If still lost I can be contacted on 2503007525.  I'll be the guy with a funny accent on a skidmark brown Santa Cruz.

Due to all the blowdown in Myra recently I'm still working on the exact route we will take upto the KVR.  I'm thinking easier the better.  I'll check it out tomorrow and make a decision, suggestions are welcome.

As for the daylight and McDougall, worst case we can just do Knox instead.

I should point out Andrew that I wasn't having a go at the exec's.  Your right, there probably is more work to be done on the FR side.  And hey, this is year one for the club.  I just wanted to point out the club isn't called Gravity Riders like Romaniuk wanted.

There does need to be some effort made to get the XC crowd involved in the future.  I just hope we step up as much as the FR people have!

Cheers.

Hey Lars, Rich here how's it going?

Just to add to what Andrew said, MTBco = what the name says, we're all about the mountain biking, regardless.

If you want to be involved on the XC side of things, I'm sure that Mike and Stu (who head up the XC/AM side of things) would only be too pleased to get some help. You don't have to be on the Exec to lend a hand, take on a project, or arrange a ride or whatever. MTBco will help and support you. Hit us with more ideas or whatever and we'll help them become reality.

Ok Lars, I know exactly where you are talking about, just hadn't heard it called the Myra parking lot before, I think of it as Crawford.  As noted above I'm planning on being there – orange Santa Cruz.  Weather forecast looks good so far, couple of days of rain to firm up the trails, then sunny on saturday.  Hopefully a few others will take note and join us.  Maybe during all this climbing we can talk about other ideas for getting the xc side more involved – events, advertising, etc.

I'm also going to start a new topic in the general discussion area to get some ideas going on XC/AM.

no offence taken….

It is our first year and we're pournig energy into fun events that bring people together, repair trails, and bring revenue to the club.  We'd like to buy a bunch of tools and make them available to all members at anytime….kind of like a sign out thing.  Planned fun races, group rides, trail days, etc, are all things we are keen on.

The club works together on the diplomatic end of things but as far as events and such go, one of us just takes it on with the club as a backing….got an idea? let us know, we'll promote it/lend a hand here we can.

Theres roumor that macdougall is getting cleared of the 6 or so trees on the DH end of it….that should happen before next summer.  Basically if dave doesn't do it first on his mx bike, i'm doing it as soon as my dakine builders pack shows up.

As an XC/AM director for MTBco I can say I'd love for someone to take on some extra things like Lar's proposed ride. We do need to do more for sure. I have arrange a couple trail days in Myra-Bellevue with The Friends of The South Slopes but mostly have been focusing on helping Parks with the mountain bike strategy and getting to know some local land managers/government orgs. in hopes of gaining their support for the club.

In the future i would love to add some bigger/better xc area trail days and rides. I would also like for the club to run some teaching based rides for all rider groups. Lars, I'd like to have you come out to a directors meeting and to our agm to discuss building our xc/am offerings. Would you be interested in taking on a regular role?

Sure, I would be happy to take on a regular role and help expand the clubs xc/am presence in the community.

Mike, if we have time, we can discuss the details at Sundays Vapour trail day.

Don't wait til then, feel free to get the communication thing moving by email so we get some traction on ideas and such. Now is the time to start planning the festival of events for 2009.

So I was waiting for Lars to post something about the ride since he started this thing, but I think he might be winging his way back to Australia for a few months so here goes:

I arrived at the Crawford parking lot at 9:00 am to find Lars and Glen (two aussies) ready to go.  It was a bit chilly, but other than that it was a beautiful sunny day.  The 3 of us rode up the Lost Lake trail and along Outhouse trail.  Since we didn't get up to the KVR, we went down swamp thing and back up Silver something or other to make up the difference in elevation and then down Vapour.  From Vapour we crossed over to Connector and went down to the bottom (after my first spill of the year going around a tight corner – but little damage done).  We returned to the cars by about 11:00 and Glen was done, so then there were two.

After the drive to Smith Creek we started stage 2 a little before noon.  I was happy to find that I was still climbing well, although not as well as Lars.  Then about half way up all the climbing caught up with me and it was a real struggle to get to the top.  After a brief rest we hit the new downhill trail.  Lars was smoking fast but due to fatigue I was all over the place until finally I slipped a pedal on a jump.  Luckily not another crash by I did manage to dig the pedal into my ankle.  When we got to the bottom, my day was done, on many counts.  In a way I was happy I hurt my ankle as this meant that I had a really good excuse not to do McDougall Rim.

Lars was still powered up and ready to go, but didn't want to do McDougall on his own, so he decided to ride up Smith Creek again, and check out the spanking brand new trail at the top that Pete told us about when we saw him on the way down.  When I left we had ridden about 3.5 hours and climbed over 1100m.  Not huge for some people, but pretty good for an old guy like me.  Who knows how much Lars still added on to this total?

Hey Lars.

Bumped into you and your wife on the Pail today. You can contact me via email through my user name at mtbr.com which is kramersdad. (I did a post there re: the Blur Lt on Sept. 6). Let me know when you are into an epic.

Cheers, Liam.
