Having just moved here 2 years ago from North van I am always exploring trails and trying to find ways to get access to the trail head without driving. As I live in upper Mission by kettle valley, I have searched for the best access to get to Crawford on my bike. The good news is that there is a network of trails that connect but by far and away the nicest route is called Thomspon flats(accessed off of Gillard FSR and connects near Bellevue Creek) - the problem is that it is private land. It is a very flat and smooth trail that would make an amazing access trail from upper mission to Crawford if we could somehow turn this trail into a Seymour Demonstration forest style of trail it would be amazing for kids to have a flat, safe area to ride. MY QUESTION is has anyone considered trying to turn this into a public trail? Is there any way to contact the owners or would that be a big mistake? It seems as if many people bike, motorbike and hike back there.
Thanks
Chuck

Yes Chuck, it would be a great idea to make that connection from Gillard to Crawford. Unfortunately, dealing with private land is always a bitch. MTBco is very busy getting off the ground so addressing this idea might take some time. Fortunately, the city has lately been very interested in developing the mountain biking scene in Kelowna so they just might take this on.

I remember the original meeting with Barb Davidson way back, when myself, Mike, Andrew, attended. The idea of connecting Gillard and Crawford was actually mentioned at that time.

Thanks for the info. I do agree that it is not a club priority but wanted to just get general input and do some research on my own into the possibilities. I willl try to get in touch with barb Davidson and see where things are at. Better do it before it becomes another subdivision – I am certainly pro-development but would like to see developers be more obligated to dedicating areas to trails and accesses at the time of development or the opportunity is missed and we just live in a car-based society.

There is going to be a second phase hopefully after the bike park happens that will include the addition of or inclusion of trails into an epic ride style setup. This will include looking @ doing things like what you mentioned, connecting existing trail areas through trails like Thompson Flats.
Great ideas and keep em coming as all ideas are welcome @ MTBco.
