Having just got home from Denman Island I wanted to post some news on the great riding available Hornby Island.  Leaving Victoria, or Namaimo travel north to Buckley Bay.  A short ferry ride gets you onto Denman Island.  Follow the signs to the Hornby Isl. ferry terminal.  Both Denman and Hornby are bike friendly.  The local bike shop is a great visit, and fantastic source of information.  A trail map of the entire island costs $5.00 which all goes to trail building and maintenance.  I am not sure if shuttling can be done, so I would bring a pedal friendly bicycle.  Starting at CO-OP Ringside Market requires a good ride to the top of Mt Geoffrey Escarpment Park.  The ride down can take one of many routes I chose Colt's Foot – Jessie's Trail – Summit (which are the up hill trails) – Devil's Kitchen – Purgatory  - Bitchin' Camero – Slick Rock – Colt's Foot.  The locals do an incredible job at keeping the trails maintained, which means stop free riding.  Stop back at VOR1ZO for the best burrito and latte you've ever had. The entire ride and island experience are beyond awesome. I plan on going back every year.  The swimming and beach combing are great.  There are incredible rock formations on both Denamn and Hornby.  Denman Isl. also has some great riding which is more natural, so expect to clear dead fall.  Explore both islands on your bike and you will find all the good trails.  Island Time on Denman has fantastic food and coffee too.  Try the date squares – trust me.  One thing to consider is the cost of ferries.  You Have to pay for your vehicle and then for every passenger.  And if you have your bikes on a roof top and they are over seven feet you pay more again.

Good Riding

I am actually taking a 4 day trip to Hornby this weekend.  The island is one of my favorite places to ride!  Buff singletrack, consistant climbs, flowy downhills- just a great network of trails.  Big Jer at the bike shop is the man with the info on the trails…he maintains them too.
