THE WAFFLE:

HOLLYWOOD ROAD MOUNTAIN BIKE SKILLS PARK

Preliminary budget approval has been received from City Council for the design and construction, in 2009, of Kelowna’s first mountain bike skills park.

The south Rutland site is a 3.8 hectare parcel of city owned land on the east side of Mission Creek at the intersection of Hollywood Road South and East Kelowna Road. The Mission Creek Greenway runs through part of the site.

The site was identified as the highest priority location by Cascade Environmental Resources Group, authors of the draft Kelowna and Area Mountain Bike Strategy.

City staff will be proceeding with design of the Hollywood Road Mountain Bike Skills Park over the next few months and will be consulting with MTBco and the public during this process on facility design and partnership opportunities.

THE WORD:

MTBco needs input from local riders who are interested in supporting the bike park. We'll need people to work with the City, Cascade Environmental (the consultants) and the bike park designers and contracted builders. We'll need volunteers to put shovel to dirt, and to maintain the park once it's built, include looking after the jumps/stunts, watering, and regular site cleaning.

Business sponsors who'd like to offer any financial or in-kind support, labour, supplies, etc, please contact info@MTBco.ca

Interested ?

Step up at the AGM (18th February, Kinsman Hall, Kelowna), email us (info@MTBco.ca) or post up right here.

We also want to know your thoughts about the park. What type of lines, size, what about freeride stunts, learner skills areas, etc. Anything you feel strongly about, then post up. What about best practice ? Do you know what works in our climate and terrain ? Pitch in, send us the info or the low down. We're also dropping this message onto Pinkbike and NSMB, but post up wherever, as we'll be collating all the info together.

That's a really nice spot, park-like and right by the creek — there's even a great swimming hole back there!  I was going to say that it would be better to have it more centrally located for kids without cars, especially kids in Glenmore or the Mission…but access down the greenway would be pretty decent, and it's certainly close enough for the Rutland families.

I visited the Burnaby bike park last summer and thought it was outstanding. I'm an older cross-country type, but the way they had stuff laid out had me pushing my limits quickly — always something easier and smaller to learn on, an intermediate line for when your confidence goes up, and some bigger stuff. The whole park was also on a slight slope, which was great…I don't think that would be easy to do down by the creek. I'm sure the club in Burnaby has learned some lessons from the experience that they'd be willing to share.

Hi, I worked at Canada Olympic Park on there dirt jump park for a couple of years when the park was a big hit with most riders. I would be willing to offer as much help as possible. I know that people have a hate on for tables but if built proper they can be just as good as gaps and you don't have to fight safety concerns. As well I think a well thought out drop park. not just plum drops but drops that have proper amount of flat to cover. this is more like the drops you would find on trails. Also I think a curved wall ride that can be hit from either direction is always a big hit. add low wood work that mimics some of the cool stunts that can be ridden in the Okanagan and you have a great park.

I think every park needs tables. But I also think that we should be making a park that blows whistler's away. And that won't be to hard to do with the creative minds in Kelowna. I think everyone should be involved under the wing of a few higher people. I will be coming to the meeting in February and I have some tricks up my sleeve for this park.

I agree with you completely, even though I am new to the area it is obvious that the talent of the builders and riders is incredible and that Kelowna could easily have the best municipal bike park in the world.  I only hope to help people avoid the mistakes that make a park pointless. I saw what worked in Calgary, and what failed, as well as what has worked in places like Rossland, and what has been neglected and not ridden. The worst thing to see is a bike park that isn't used.

I pretty much agree to all the previous posts but these are my opinions.

Have a jump park:
Withing the jump park have XL's, L's, M's, and S's(OR The diamond square circle) section for riders of all skill level.  Have them all tables EXCEPT for XL's make those gaps so no beginners will wreck the jumps and just ride over them and waste more experienced riders time.  Also throw in optinal lines (ex. on the XL line have gap to gap to EITHER hip or wall ride TO to gap or drop).

"North Shore" Park:
Like the bottom of the Burnaby Park have it with different skinnies, and ladder bridges.  Yet again have options for all levels for the safety of the park.

A Slopestyle Park:
This would be a nice bonus but pretty much build like whister's park.  With good flow and large stunts for experienced riders only.

Once the park is built and running well, there should be competitions to raise money for the park and upkeep of it.  Different dirt jams or slopestyle with even like local riders such as you casey and others who are starting to catch up.

That was my opinion and only one mans opinion.  Feel free to reply and good luck!  I hope I will be able to make it to the meeting

Cheers;
Konabikerjohn

How much of the lot do we have to work with, and will we have to put in a parking area?

Part of the lot ouside the bike park area will be dedicated to parking.  It has to be considered because of local residential property. That's been specified in the RFP. MTBco wants to be "good neighbours".

This forum has not been visited in quite some time, but Im still hoping that someone with some info might be viewing still.

Just moved from Victoria to Kelowna last summer and discovered the bike park here.  Rather different than the one back in Vic but I liked the intensity and potential I saw here.  Wondering if there were any major(ish) additions being planned for the park this season and how often the group maintenance happens?  Everyone always likes to see a well kept park, not only for rider happiness, but for rider safety as well.

If your calander is correct then at the very least I shall see you all on the 27th to chat and fix it up after all this snow disappears.

To answer a few of your questions…

There is a plan to build 3 wood/dirt lines in the open area beyond the pump track but no date has been finalized.

Maintenance is a constant battle since we live in the desert and we could always use a hand in keeping the park dialed.

If you are keen to help out might I suggest also attending out Annual General Meeting this Tuesday as I believe we are currently seeking a new bikepark director as well as a solid crew of volunteers to help out.

Also note that most of the dates we set may change due to weather and snowline.  So basically the dates are a ballpark till we are sure summer is here.

If you have any further/specific questions, feel free to email me directly at: amcintosh@mtbco.ca
