Hi,
I will be visiting Kelowna in the middle of October 2008 for a conference and I'm hoping to check out the riding scene. What trails are best in October? Can I expect a lot of rain? I'm from Abbotsford, so I am assuming so. I ride a Rocky Mtn Element 50 and I enjoy a good mix of XC and Freeriding. I'm staying at the Grand Okanagan, so I expect I'll be fairly central to the action. Thanks for your replies.

October in Kelowna can be mostly nice sunny days with the odd rainy day. Nothing like the coast at all. Its cold here at night though so bring appropriote gear. All our trails are great in the fall, Gillard (DH, Freeride area), Myra-Bellvue Provincial Park (xc, am-be aware that blow down trees are a problem on many trails so ask a shop for advice on what to ride in the park), Powers Creek (Freeride), Smith Creek (primo am riding)…
There is a description of all the local trails here on the MTBco site and maps at all shops. Enjoy!

Mike has provided a good summary, and to add a bit of detail, from your description I would recommend Crawford (Myra-Bellvue) - fairly close (15 mins by car) - good mix of xc with some more technical downhill trails thrown in (ride down Vapor). There are lots of maps posted at trail junctions. You could also either ride up to the KVR trail bed or drive up, and check out the world famous trestles – very scenic but not challenging riding (unless you ride up, and back down – Crawford is a good route for this, but it will take a while)
For something closer to the Grand, you can pedal over to Knox and go up and down a bit. If you want to drive a little further (about 1/2 hour) go to the westside and check out Smith Creek, although this one is a bit tougher without a guide and it is a pretty big singletrack climb, but as Mike said, it is Primo!

Thanks so much for the info. I looked a little deeper into the Crawford Trails and they look awesome! You suggested Vapor, anything else? Is the Myra Trestles parking lot close to the Vapor trailhead? I prefer to drive up, start with the downhill and then end with the ride back up. That way I'm riding the DH on fresh legs and I get more of a work out on the climb at the end of my ride. Also, how far are the trestles from the Vapor trailhead? I wouldn't mind having a quick look, since I have read so much about these trestles.
Smith Creek looks great too and I'll definitely check it out! A full single track loop sounds right up my alley!
Finally, I intend to buy a trails map from one of the local bike shops. Is there one close to the Grand Hotel that you guys would recommend? Do you have a favourite LBS in your area? Thanks again!

From KVR parking to Vapour, is a 5 minute ride. Can't miss the drop in to Vapour off the KVR. Ride back up from bottom parking lot, you can do a few combinations of trails. Trail maps can be bought from local bike shops.
Note: where Vapour meets Swamp Thing be sure to go right then left at the double track, that intersection throws a few people and messes up their ride.

Thanks to everyone who provided info on this thread! I had a great visit to Kelowna and a couple of great, memorable rides, too!
I hit the Crawford Trails from the parking lot at the bottom of the Lost Lake Trail, which I used to ascend to the KVR. What a cool environment of dead and living! It was a bit of a bitch with all of the dead fall, hovever. From the top I descended Vapour Trail, where I met Colby doing some maintenance. Great guy and a wealth of info! After, I hit Big Drops then Rocky Screech, which I then ascended to do Jeckle and Hyde. What a great day! I will be back!
On my next excursion I hit the Smith Creek XC Trail. Wow! I never rode up a single track, dedicated-to-XC trail before. So good! Some good technical uphill, though I wish it had been drier!
My third time out, I tried to find Postill. I found the creek and I found about 200m of trail, but is that it? Like, who goes that far out just to hit 200m of trail? Or did I miss something…?
Anyways, thanks again! Great info! Great website! Great trails!
