Toonie Ride Wrap Up Party – Sept 11, 2011

The grand finale of the 2011 MTBCo Toonie Ride season will be this weekend, Sunday September 11^th. The ride starts at 10am at Smith Creek, and will be followed by snacks, refreshing beverages from Tree Brewing, and a chilli feast.

We will be once again joined by our generous shop sponsors – Bike Barn, Chainline Cycle, Cyclepath, Fresh Air Experience / Concept, Kelowna Cycle, Outbound Cycle, Sovereign Cycle, and Union Cycle – who kept our bellies fed and our thirst quenched throughout the season. Thank you! We couldn’t have had such a successful season without you.

Thank you also to all the riders who continue to come out in increasing numbers. We hope to carry the momentum into the 2012 season, so anyone new coming out for their first toonie ride this Sunday can ride for a loonie*. If you’re a familiar face and you bring a new rider, you both ride for a toonie*.

We hope to see you all there!

*For insurance purposes, all riders must be MTBCo members. Memberships are $25 and can be purchased the day of the event. All membership fees go directly towards trail maintenance and community events.

Come Slay the JabbaRocky

The Rose Valley trail gnomes have been hard at work punching out a new trail full of switchback fun, a fast flowy descent, and one of the best views in Kelowna. JabbaRocky is a cross country / all mountain trail that can be accessed from the gate at the dead end of Rosewood in West Kelowna. Head down the dirt road, past the gate towards the Rose Valley dam (approx 1.4 km). The entrance will be in a small gravel pit on the left side of the road. There should be a few red flags to get you started. The climb is approximately 6km, and crosses the old lake loop trail several times. In all cases keep climbing the uphill switchbacks. There are exactly a bazillionteen of them. At the JabbaRocky trail sign turn in and enjoy.

The descent is roughly 3km long, and while there are no stunts on the trail yet, JabbaRockey boasts some of the best rock gardens Kelowna has to offer.

The only split in the trail comes almost at the end, where there is an optional “easy-out” to the left, while the right hand option weaves riders through a rocky boulder field.

As this is a new trail, any help packing it in is much appreciated. Think you’re up to the task?

Powers Trail Day Recap

Powers trail day saw the successful completion of Quick Rip, a connector trail feeding into Spiro and Stinky Pinky. Riders anxious to check out this new flowy trail of loam are asked to use Route 66 at the 2km mark into Spiro and Stinky Pinky, as the entrance at 2.5 is still quite mucky. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped throughout the day. We hope to see you all out this Sunday for the Gillard build day too!

Bike Park Season Opener!

The Mission Creek Bike Skills Park will officially open this Sunday, May 1st!

Come join MTBco and our local bike shops to celebrate the official season opener. Hit the newly buffed jump lines and take a spin on the pump track. There will be a BBQ fundraiser for MTBco and the bike park, contests & games, and of course, SWAG GIVEAWAYS from our local bike shop sponsors!

Opening at 11am, BBQ at 12 noon, games & contests on at 2pm.

Postill Trail Day – Oct. 17th

Summer’s over, the bike park is closed, and it’s time to show the local trails some love. Trail maintenance and clean up in the morning. Lunch at noon. After lunch, suit up and test out the results of your hard word with a fun chainless DH event, courtesy of our friends at Union Cycle.

If you have your own hand tools (shovel, pick, rake, 4 gallon buckets), please bring them along with snacks and drinking water.

Meet at the base of the Postill trails, which are up Postill Lake Rd. Take Old Vernon Rd. to Postill Drive, then turn left on Postill Lake Rd. The trailhead is just after the bridge.

Powers Creek Trail Day – Oct 3rd

Diddler has a new masterpiece nearly ready to unveil, and if enough of you show up the first Sunday in October, it could be ready to ride this fall. His new line, Master of Slag, will add another kilometre to the already incredible Builders Only.

Just show up at the top of the Powers Creek trails at 10 am on Sunday, October 3rd. Be ready to build and bring your bike so you can ride on the finished product. We’ll have a BBQ in the afternoon, but you might want to bring some snacks and something to drink. Trail building can be some thirsty work, eh?

If you have your own hand tools, like shovels, rakes, picks, and 4 gallon buckets, please bring those along too as we have only so many of our own tools to lend out.

Mountain Bike Skills Park Opens

Kelowna’s newest mountain bike park officially opened on Sunday.

Deputy Mayor Angela Reid opened the skills park by holding one end of a ribbon over her head. A biker made a perfect jump over Reid’s head, thus breaking the ribbon and opening the park.

“This park is the first of its kind within the City and is part of our commitment to support active living,” says Reid.

“The Kelowna area is world-renown for mountain biking and some of the sport’s top riders helped with the park development. It’s been a true partnership effort. This site and the rider training programs offered here will help support the progression of the sport.”

Johnny Smoke, president of the Mountain Bikers of the Central Okanagan says they are pleased to partner with the City on the park.

“The park offers something for all ages and skill levels, from beginner to expert,” says Smoke.

Under an operating agreement with the City of Kelowna, the Mountain Bikers of Central Okanagan will manage the park, maintain the bike facilities, and provide skill clinics for riders.

Accessible from the Greenway, the park was officially named Mission Creek Mountain Bike Skills Park.

Located on a 3.4 hectare site at 1960 Hollywood Road South, the park features a pump track and six dirt jump lanes progressing from beginner to expert.

The new features were put to the test during the grand opening as an all-day long jump jam tested the skills of local riders.

“We worked closely with the mountain biking community to create a regional strategy to guide future development,” says Reid.

“This facility was identified as a priority and is an important step to reach our vision for the Central Okanagan to be recognized world-wide for its excellence in mountain bike trails, facilities and management.”

The $243,000 park was designed in collaboration with local riders.
